Manipur: BSF Jawan Killed in Encounter, Assam Rifles Personnel Injured
National Desk, 6 June: One Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was killed and two Assam Rifle personnel suffered gunshot injuries during an engagement with several terrorists in Serou of Manipur on the nights of June 5 and 6.
The injured Assam Rifles cadre were taken to Mantriphukhri for further treatment.
“One BSF Jawan sustained fatal injuries while two Assam Rifles personnel sustained gunshot wounds (GSW) in general area Serou,” the Spear Corps of the Indian Army said in a statement.
“Extensive area domination operations by Assam Rifles, BSF and Police undertaken in areas of Sugnu/Serou in Manipur. Intermittent firing between Security Forces and group of insurgents”>insurgents took place throughout night of June 5-6, Security Forces effectively retaliated to the fire,” they added.
Indian Army, Assam Rifles, CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) and police launched their vast area domination operations in response to the recent crisis in Manipur.
Army, Assam Rifles, police and CAPFs started area control operations in Manipur’s hills and valleys on Saturday.
Forty guns, the majority of which were automatic, mortars, ammo and other military supplies have so far been recovered as a result of the operations. They were carried out with the help of quadcopters and unmanned aerial vehicles for surveillance.
Manipur was the scene of a flurry of violence at a rally called by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand that Meitei/Meetei be classified as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) on May 3.
The protest was organised against the demand for inclusion of the State’s Meitei community in the ST category.
