Manipur Celebrates International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples with Cultural Showcase
Northeast Desk, 10th August: Representatives from 25 Yelhoumee tribes of Manipur convened at Tanthapolis Theater in Lamphel to celebrate the “International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples” with a colorful cultural event. The gathering served as a tribute to the tribes’ shared ancestry and rich heritage.
The celebration featured storytelling and cultural displays that emphasized the deep connections among the tribes. Naga and Meetei/Meitei speakers shared historical narratives, delving into the origins of the term “Hao” and the importance of preserving their unique cultural practices in the face of globalization.
A significant topic of discussion was the impact of modern development on indigenous cultures. Speakers called for the creation of a dictionary for local dialects to enhance understanding and communication among tribes. They expressed concern that as global norms become more prevalent, the distinct cultural identities of these communities might be diminished.
The event showcased traditional performances, including Maibi Jagoi, Thougal Jagoi, Maring Dance, and Kabui Dance. These performances highlighted the vibrant cultural attire and artistic expressions of the Yelhoumee tribes, celebrating their enduring cultural heritage amidst contemporary challenges.]
