Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh Stands Firm Against Separate Administration Demand in Kuki Inhabited Areas
Northeast Desk, 27th July: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh reaffirmed the state government’s resolute stance against the demand for “separate administration for the Kuki inhabited areas.” He emphasized that the government is not opposed to the Kuki community, with whom they have coexisted for a significant period. However, he warned of decisive action against “illegal migrants (from Myanmar).”
The tension between Manipur and Mizoram escalated as Singh urged his Mizoram counterpart to refrain from interfering in the “internal matters of another state.” The statement came in response to the Mizoram CM’s participation in a public rally denouncing the violence in Manipur.
During the solidarity rally in Mizoram, Singh expressed his condemnation of the use of “abusive words” against him. The Chief Minister labeled such acts as barbaric and made this statement while attending a function observing Kargil Vijay Divas at the CM’s Secretariat in Imphal.
The solidarity rally in Mizoram, organized by the influential NGO Coordination Committee and supported by various Mizo organizations, called for an end to violence and attacks on the Kuki Zomi communities in Manipur. Additionally, they criticized the alleged inability of the Biren Singh government to restore peace.
Notably, Mizoram has extended support to over 12,000 displaced Kuki-Zomis from Manipur due to their shared ethnic bonds.
