Manipur Chief Minister’s Office Demands Report on Jiribam Violence by June 11
Northeast Desk, 9th June: In response to the recent outbreak of violence in Jiribam district, the Manipur Chief Minister’s Office has directed the police department to submit a comprehensive report by June 11. The report should detail the actions taken to address the suspected militant movement and subsequent violence in the district.
This directive follows a prior instruction issued on January 15, wherein the Chief Minister’s Office had urged the Director General of Police to implement all necessary security measures to prevent any incidents. The directive was in response to reports of approximately 200 armed suspected militants moving from Churachandpur to Phaitol Village, Old and New Kaiphundai area of Tamenglong district, which shares a border with Jiribam.
In addition to the latest directive, the Chief Minister’s Office has enclosed copies of previous instructions issued on January 15, January 27, and January 31, 2024. These instructions outlined the required security measures in the Jiribam district and were communicated to all relevant authorities, including the DG.
The Chief Minister’s Office has emphasized the timely communication of security concerns and measures to the concerned parties. Despite these efforts, the recent violence indicates potential lapses in the execution of these security directives.
It is noteworthy that the Chairmanship of the unified command, which oversees such security measures, was removed on May 31, 2023. The report from the police department is expected to provide clarity on whether adequate actions were taken following the previous directives and to outline the steps being taken to restore peace and order in Jiribam.
The administration is keen on addressing these security lapses and ensuring that the district is safeguarded against further incidents of violence.
