Imphal: A wave of tension has swept through Churachandpur district in Manipur after Richard Hmar, a prominent Hmar tribal leader, was violently assaulted, triggering an immediate imposition of prohibitory orders.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening within the VK Montessori complex located at Zenhang Lamka, where Hmar, serving as the General Secretary of Hmar Inpui, was targeted by unknown assailants.
Law enforcement officials have indicated that the attack was likely precipitated by a heated dispute arising from a near-collision between Hmar’s vehicle and a two-wheeler. This confrontation escalated rapidly, culminating in the physical assault that has now plunged the district into a state of heightened alert.
The gravity of the situation prompted the Additional District Magistrate to invoke Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, issuing stringent prohibitory orders. This measure was deemed necessary to counteract the palpable threat to public order and to mitigate the risk of escalating communal tensions. The enforced regulations expressly prohibit unauthorized processions, unlawful gatherings of five or more individuals, and the carrying of any form of weapon, including sticks and stones.
In the aftermath of the assault, groups of protesters have taken to the streets, attempting to enforce a shutdown across the town. Reports have surfaced of men armed with sticks patrolling the locality, and instances of stone pelting have been documented in certain areas, further exacerbating the already volatile atmosphere.
Hmar Inpui has issued a strong condemnation of the attack, demanding the immediate apprehension and arrest of those responsible. The organization has also issued a stark warning, indicating that further action will be pursued if justice is not swiftly delivered, underscoring the deep sense of outrage and urgency within the community.
