Manipur: Churachandpur Meitei IDPs Secure Governor’s Assurance on Key Demands
IMPHAL: The internally displaced Meitei community from Churachandpur has received a ray of hope following a crucial meeting between a delegation of the Churachandpur Meitei United Committee (CMUC) and the Governor of Manipur. The CMUC, representing Meitei families displaced due to ongoing unrest, pressed for urgent action on long-pending demands, securing an assurance from the Governor that selected issues would be addressed within three days.
During the high-level engagement, the CMUC leaders reiterated the dire circumstances faced by their community, emphasizing the government’s perceived inaction on previously submitted memorandums from March 13 and April 21, 2025. Their comprehensive list of grievances included vital provisions such as educational assistance for displaced students, the demand for internally displaced persons (IDPs) to manage their own relief camps for better efficiency, and streamlined access to essential documents. The delegation also highlighted the critical need for organised resettlement plans, sustainable livelihood provisions through employment, and the construction of temporary housing facilities at Phougakchao Ikhai in Bishnupur District.
Acknowledging the gravity of the humanitarian situation, the Governor assured the CMUC that immediate attention would be given to specific demands, with a commitment to expedite communication with relevant government bodies to ensure time-bound implementation. This assurance comes as a significant development for the displaced community.
While welcoming the Governor’s positive response, CMUC leaders made it clear that they would meticulously monitor the progress of these assurances. They also issued a stern warning: should tangible outcomes not materialise within the stipulated timeframe, displaced individuals residing in relief camps across the state would be compelled to escalate their agitation.
The detailed memorandums previously submitted by the CMUC outlined six primary demands: a special education package for displaced students, IDP-led management of relief camps to address grievances more effectively, intervention against alleged discrimination and delays in securing crucial documents like birth and domicile certificates, and an urgent appeal for planned and secure return to their original locations. Additionally, they sought government job allocations under a special livelihood scheme tailored to the skills of displaced individuals and the construction of temporary homes on designated land in Bishnupur District until permanent rehabilitation could be facilitated.
The CMUC has expressed hope that the Governor’s commitment will translate into swift and substantial action, bringing much-needed relief to the affected Meitei families. However, the organisation remains resolute, affirming that the movement will intensify if genuine steps are not observed, driven by the collective resolve of a community still grappling with immense hardship.
