Manipur: Churachandpur-Sadar Hills Road to Unblock After Days of Protest
In a significant victory for the Kuki-Zo community, the crucial road connecting Churachandpur and Sadar Hills is set to reopen on Monday, December 2, 2024. The road had been closed since November 25th following the disappearance of an MES employee in Leimakhong.
The abrupt closure of the road had sparked widespread protests and condemnation from the local community. The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) strongly condemned the move, emphasizing the road’s critical importance as a lifeline for the region.
“This road is not just a road, it’s our lifeline,” the CoTU stated, reflecting the deep-seated frustration and determination of the community.
Protests intensified on November 30th, with demonstrators demanding the immediate reopening of the road. The Leimakhong Area Public Council (LAPC) and local civil society organizations played a pivotal role in negotiating with the authorities.
The CoTU lauded the community, especially women, for their unwavering determination in forcing authorities to reconsider the blockade. “Their courage and solidarity have ensured the restoration of our freedom of movement,” the organization said.
