Manipur CM Condemns Attack on BJP Spokesperson’s Family, Vows Legal Action

Northeast Desk, 27th August: In a strong response to the recent attack on the family of BJP spokesperson T Michael Lamjathang Haokip, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has condemned the incident as a “cowardly act.” The attack, which took place on the night of August 25 in Phailien village, Churachandpur district, involved the vandalism and arson of Haokip’s residence.

CM Singh took to social media platform X to express his outrage, stating, “The attack carried out on the family members of Micheal Lamjathang, a leader of the Thadou community, the oldest among the ethnic tribes of Manipur, as well as a BJP spokesperson by vandalising his house was an act of cowardice.” He further highlighted the gravity of the situation, describing it as a direct challenge to the unity and integrity of the state.

The Chief Minister assured the public that appropriate legal action would be taken against those responsible, reinforcing his commitment to maintaining law and order. “We will initiate appropriate legal action against the culprits,” Singh declared.

According to reports, the attack on Haokip’s home is the second such incident amidst ongoing tensions in Manipur. Armed miscreants targeted his residence around 11 pm on August 25, causing significant damage.

Haokip, who is a prominent leader of the Thadou tribe, shared his concerns on social media, stating, “We are lifting our prayers and many are standing with us in prayer for the Thadou community.” The incident follows recent calls by three MLAs from the region advocating for a separate administration within Manipur and the recognition of their tribes by specific names rather than the collective term “Kuki-Zo.”

The attack has intensified concerns over the ongoing tensions in the region, with calls for a swift resolution to prevent further escalation.
