Manipur CM Deliberates on Congress’ ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ Amidst Law and Order Concerns

Northeast Desk, 9th January: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh addressed the media on January 9, expressing his concerns about the critical law and order situation in the state in the context of the Congress party’s ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra.’

He mentioned that the decision to permit Rahul Gandhi’s rally is under active consideration, with reviews of reports from various security agencies. A definitive decision will be made after assessing these reports.

The Congress party, led by Rahul Gandhi, has scheduled the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra to begin from Imphal on January 14th and conclude in Mumbai on March 20th, covering approximately 6,713 kilometers.

Despite the strategic political move, the state government has not granted permission for the yatra’s launch. Congress officials have urged Chief Minister N Biren Singh to prioritize peace over politics, emphasizing the yatra’s focus on Manipur’s future rather than political gains.

The yatra aims to engage with 355 Lok Sabha constituencies across 14 states, addressing issues like unemployment, inflation, the rich-poor divide, farmer concerns, and social justice.

Rahul Gandhi will adopt a hybrid mode of travel, utilizing buses for longer stretches and incorporating short walks (adayatras) to connect with people personally.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s concerns about the law-and-order situation in Manipur, marred by ethnic violence since May 2023, add complexity to the decision-making process regarding the Congress-led rally.

The delicate situation involving conflicts between the Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo tribal community will influence the final decision, balancing the need for political expression with the imperative of maintaining peace in the state.
