Manipur: CM N Biren Singh Addresses Churachandpur Arson Incident in State Legislative Assembly

Northeast Desk, 1st March: During the ongoing 5th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister N Biren Singh provided updates on the recent Churachandpur arson incident, emphasizing the government’s proactive measures to address the situation.

Responding to a calling attention motion moved by Congress MLA Keisham Meghachandra Singh, Chief Minister Biren informed the assembly that eight FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident, with two cases transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Expressing condemnation for the violent mob’s attempt to burn down and vandalize government buildings, including the DC complex, bungalow, and SP office, Chief Minister Biren highlighted the suspected involvement of militants, with evidence suggesting the use of AK-47s among the mob.

He also mentioned an FIR filed against an individual for allegedly inciting violence through a divisive tweet just hours before the incident.

Despite the violence resulting in two fatalities, Chief Minister Biren noted that security forces successfully prevented severe damage to the targeted buildings and preserved government records and documents. He reassured the assembly that most government documents had been digitized beforehand to mitigate potential losses in such incidents.

Addressing the circumstances leading to the incident, Chief Minister Biren mentioned the suspension of a head constable in Churachandpur district by the SP, emphasizing that the action was taken in accordance with the law and the officer’s duty.

As the assembly session continues, Chief Minister Biren’s updates shed light on the government’s efforts to address the Churachandpur arson incident and uphold law and order in Manipur.
