Manipur CM N. Biren Singh Condemns Violence and Defends Relief Efforts Amid Criticism

Northeast Desk, 25th July: On July 25, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condemned all acts of violence and stressed the importance of working collectively to maintain peace in the state. Speaking at the launch of a book program organized by the Department of Sericulture and the Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, Singh emphasized the need for adherence to constitutional and legal frameworks in addressing issues such as illegal immigration and the implementation of the NRC.

Responding to Congress’s criticism regarding the lack of mention of Manipur in the Union Budget, Singh clarified that the central government has been actively involved in relief efforts. He highlighted that a total of Rs 145 crore has been allocated for managing relief camps, with additional funds directed towards various support measures:

  • Rs 3 crore for distributing televisions in relief camps.
  • Rs 23 crore in instalments of Rs 1,000 to camp residents on multiple occasions.
  • Rs 44 crore for children’s nutrition and personal hygiene.
  • Rs 19 crore for compensatory packages related to agricultural activities.

Singh also noted that Rs 25,000 has been given as the first installment of a special assistance package to 6,000 families affected by violence, with each family set to receive Rs 1 lakh. He refuted claims of inadequate support, pointing to additional allocations of Rs 80 crore for flood relief and Rs 45 crore for distributing GI sheets to those impacted by recent hailstorms.
