Manipur CM N. Biren Singh Convenes Talks with JAC Following Fatal Drone Attack in Koutruk

Northeast Desk, September 4, 2024 — Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh met with the Joint Action Committee (JAC) in response to the drone attack in Koutruk that resulted in the death of Ngangbam Surbala Devi. The incident, attributed to suspected Kuki militants, has intensified regional tensions.

Singh expressed deep empathy for the affected community, stating on social media, “The grief and frustration felt by the community are deeply understood, and the Government is committed to taking necessary steps to address these issues promptly and effectively.”

The attack, which occurred on September 1, also injured several individuals, including three police officers. In reaction, the Manipur government has formed a high-level investigative committee led by Additional DGP (Int) Ashutosh Kumar Sinha. This committee is tasked with probing the incident and devising strategies to counter future drone assaults.

The Director General of Police of Manipur described the attack as “unprecedented,” highlighting the militants’ use of multiple RPGs delivered via advanced drones. The five-member committee, which includes senior officials from the army, air force, and paramilitary forces, has been given a deadline of September 13 to submit their report.
