Manipur CM N Biren Singh Criticizes Mamata Banerjee Over Remarks on Jay Shah’s ICC Chairmanship

Northeast Desk, 30th August: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her recent remarks regarding Jay Shah’s election as the Chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Singh accused Banerjee of misunderstanding the democratic process behind Shah’s election, emphasizing that the position was not simply handed over but earned through a legitimate and democratic vote.

“Didi thinks ICC Chairperson has been handed over—much like giving away the power of an organization to a nephew or son. Let me correct you, Jay Shah got voted to be the chairman. In other words, he has been elected. Is this too hard to comprehend?” Singh remarked, responding to Banerjee’s earlier comments.

Mamata Banerjee had previously taken to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate Union Home Minister Amit Shah on his son’s new role. Her post, widely interpreted as sarcastic, read: “Congratulations, Union Home Minister!! Your son has not become a politician, but has become the ICC Chairman; a post much more important than most politicians’! Your son has indeed become very powerful, and I congratulate you on his most elevated achievement indeed! Kudos!!”

Singh’s retort underscores the political tensions between the leaders, with his remarks aimed at defending Jay Shah’s election and countering Banerjee’s insinuations.
