Northeast Desk, 9th August: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh addressed the state’s legislative assembly, defending his government’s decision to relocate people from violence-stricken areas such as Churachandpur, Moreh, and Imphal Valley. Singh explained that the evacuations were necessary to protect lives during the intense ethnic violence that erupted on May 3.
Responding to opposition queries, Singh recounted the sleepless nights spent in his office, deliberating immediate actions as violence broke out. He revealed that residents from Moreh were initially sheltered at an Assam Rifles camp, while those in Churachandpur found refuge in the state’s Secretariat. However, escalating concerns for their safety and urgent pleas for help led to the decision to move them to safer locations, including the Imphal Valley.
Singh acknowledged the current criticism surrounding the relocation, with some questioning why people were moved between the Imphal Valley and other regions. He argued that had they not taken these steps, and if incidents had occurred, the situation could have led to even greater frustration and unrest. The Chief Minister stressed that, despite large, hostile mobs assembling, the government avoided indiscriminate firing, opting instead to focus on life-saving evacuations.
Singh also warned of ongoing efforts to disrupt the peace process, citing recent arson attacks in Jiribam just a day after peace initiatives were announced. Nevertheless, he noted positive developments, such as the return of 133 individuals who had previously fled Jiribam, and reassured that efforts are underway to facilitate the return of other displaced persons.
The ethnic violence, which began in May last year between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kukis, has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands from their homes. Despite the challenges, Singh expressed hope that signs of peace are beginning to emerge in the troubled region.
