Manipur CM N Biren Singh Resigns, Cites State’s Welfare as Priority
Imphal: In a significant political development, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tendered his resignation, citing his unwavering commitment to the state’s stability and well-being. The announcement was confirmed by Manipur BJP President A Sharda Devi, who emphasized that Singh’s decision was made in the interest of the people.
“Our CM has resigned for the people of the state. He has also requested the Central Government to safeguard Manipur’s integrity and ensure the safety of its citizens. His decision was taken with the state’s future in mind,” Sharda Devi stated.
Dismissing speculation of internal discord within the BJP ranks, she clarified that there were no differences among the party’s MLAs. Instead, Biren Singh’s resignation was a strategic move to restore peace and stability in Manipur, which has been grappling with governance and security concerns.
Shortly after Singh’s resignation, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla revoked the scheduled Assembly session, which was set to begin on February 10. In an official notification, the Governor declared the earlier order issued on January 24 as “null and void,” further deepening the political uncertainty in the state.
The cancellation of the Assembly session comes amid mounting pressure on the BJP-led government, with a possible no-confidence motion and floor test being pushed by the Congress-led Opposition. Political analysts suggest that Singh’s resignation signals a transition in leadership, allowing new governance strategies to tackle the challenges facing Manipur.
As the state awaits further developments, discussions are underway regarding the appointment of a new Chief Minister, who will be tasked with steering Manipur toward stability and progress.
