Manipur CM Praises Assam’s Move to Recognize Manipuri as Associate Official Language

Northeast Desk, 23rd August: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has lauded Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for proposing the introduction of Manipuri as an Associate Official Language in three districts of Barak Valley and Hojai in Assam. Singh took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his gratitude, emphasizing the importance of this decision for the Manipuri community’s cultural, social, and linguistic preservation in Assam.

“This decision will be a significant step towards the preservation & protection of the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of the Manipuris in the state of Assam,” Singh stated.

The Assam government, on August 22, tabled The Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, through Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika on behalf of CM Sarma. The bill seeks to grant official recognition to Manipuri as an Associate Official Language in the districts of Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai.

In his Statement of Objects and Reasons, CM Sarma pointed out that a substantial number of people in these districts speak Manipuri, highlighting the persistent demand for official recognition of their language. The move reflects Assam’s commitment to embracing and honoring its diverse linguistic communities.

This proposal follows a significant decision made earlier this year on February 23, when the Assam cabinet approved Manipuri as an Associate Official Language for these districts. The initiative is expected to strengthen the cultural and social ties between the states of Assam and Manipur, fostering a deeper sense of unity and respect for the Manipuri community’s heritage.
