Manipur CM Welcomes Regulation for Border Movement, Announces New Initiatives
Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed gratitude to the Union Home Ministry for introducing a regulation allowing Myanmar residents within 10 km of the international border to enter Manipur temporarily using a “border pass” issued by the Assam Rifles.
Calling it “a good beginning,” Singh highlighted the importance of managing cross-border movement to maintain security and order. “Earlier, nobody paid attention to who was going in or out of the country. I thank the Union Home Minister and the Ministry of Home Affairs for introducing this regulation,” Singh said. He added that not only the Assam Rifles but also state police, health officials, and district administration staff at the border are now involved in implementing the policy. He urged all personnel to remain vigilant and utilize advanced technology to prevent illegal immigration.
Addressing the recent suicide of a 21-year-old woman at the Mekola relief camp, Singh clarified that an FIR had been filed and investigations were ongoing. He noted that preliminary information suggested the incident was unrelated to conditions in the relief camp and stemmed from personal issues. “The case is under investigation,” he assured.
The Chief Minister also announced plans for the construction of a state-of-the-art museum at Canchipur, with an estimated cost of ₹40 crore. The museum will be fully digitized and designed to educate future generations about the history of Manipur and its place within the broader national narrative. “Our goal is to help people understand the complexities of Manipur’s past and present. This is my priority,” Singh stated.
In response to concerns about the misuse of social media, Singh condemned the spread of misinformation and online mockery, calling it “very unfortunate.” He assured the public that the government was actively tackling the issue through cybercrime units. “Several arrests have been made, accounts have been blocked, and we will continue to act in accordance with the law,” he said.
These announcements come amid ongoing efforts to address security, cultural preservation, and social stability in Manipur, reflecting the government’s multi-faceted approach to the state’s development and governance.
