Manipur: COCOMI Condemns Environmental Catastrophe in state, Calls for Swift Action

Northeast Desk, 8th February: In a troubling turn of events, tension has gripped peripheral areas of Imphal East, with reports emerging of peculiar substances spilling into the Iril river on February 7th, triggering concerns over environmental safety and community well-being.

Condemning this reprehensible act, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a prominent socio-cultural organization, has demanded immediate action against the perpetrators responsible for the incident, emphasizing the need to safeguard downstream communities from potential harm.

Expressing shock and dismay over the incident, COCOMI labeled it as a brutal assault on villagers in Itham Moirangpurel Tumukhong, further decrying the poisoning of Thoubal river water during a suspected armed group’s attack on individuals working at the sand quarry on the same day.

“The aftermath of this deplorable act has led to a severe environmental catastrophe in the Leimakhong areas,” stated COCOMI in a press note, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of such acts of violence on both communities and the environment.

Demanding swift and stringent action against the perpetrators and the groups involved, COCOMI underscored the alarming pattern of genocidal attempts, calling for an immediate and robust response to apprehend those responsible and prevent further incidents of this nature.

As Manipur grapples with the fallout from this environmental disaster, COCOMI’s call for decisive action and accountability reflects the urgency of addressing such challenges and upholding the integrity and well-being of the state and its people.
