Manipur Collects Biometric Data from Myanmar Nationals to Curb Illegal Immigration

Northeast Desk, 18th July: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has confirmed the collection of biometric details from 24 individuals of Myanmar origin in the Tengnoupal district, as part of a broader effort to identify and manage illegal immigrants from the neighboring country.

A combined team of state police, Assam Rifles personnel, and government officials conducted a search operation in Govajang village, during which they identified and recorded the biometric data of these individuals. Singh detailed on Facebook that the search, led by officials including Md. Ejaj of Tengnoupal and SDO Moreh, aimed to re-verify and re-identify residents in the area.

The identification process, previously halted due to violence, resumed last July. Singh expressed his gratitude to the security personnel and officials for their dedicated efforts and announced that future biometric exercises would continue in Moreh and adjacent areas.

Manipur shares a 398-km border with Myanmar, which is mostly unfenced. However, efforts are underway to secure the border to prevent illegal crossings.
