Manipur: Commemoration of Maharaj Narasingh’s 174th Death Anniversary Held at Kangla Fort

Northeast Desk, 11th April: The State Archaeology, Department of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur, orchestrated a poignant tribute to Maharaj Narasingh on the occasion of his 174th Death Anniversary at Kangla Fort this morning.

The commemorative event commenced with a soul-stirring rendition of Shree Shree Govinda Jiu Jalakeli Pala, led by Maharajkumari Hemamanjuri (Sanatombi). Chief Guest, Commissioner (Art & Culture), Shri M. Joy Singh, underscored the historical import of the day, tracing its observance back to April 11, 1850.

Singh extolled Maharaj Narasingh for his indelible mark on Manipur’s history during his reign from 1844 to 1850. Noteworthy contributions included the relocation of the Royal Palace to Kangla from Canchipur, initiation of Kangla Sha construction, introduction of the Mera Houchongba festival for national integration, and various economic initiatives pivotal to Manipur’s growth.

Recognizing Maharaj Narasingh’s selflessness and benevolence, Commissioner Singh urged the youth to embrace principles of patriotism and nationalism in their endeavors.

Director (Art & Culture), Manipur, Shri K. Dinamani Singh, presiding over the ceremony, delved into the historical resonance of the day and unveiled plans for a ‘Light and Sound’ project at Thangal General Temple in Palace Compound, Imphal. This visionary initiative aims to visually narrate Manipur’s rich history, catering to both youths and tourists.

The commemoration encompassed customary rituals such as floral tributes, Guard of Honour, gun salute, sounding of the last post, observance of two-minute silence, and homage to the Shree Shree Govind Jiu Jalakeli Pala. Dignitaries, government officials, and descendants of Maharaj Narasingh graced the event, reaffirming the imperative of preserving Manipur’s cultural legacy for posterity.
