Manipur: Committee Formed to Investigate Oil Spill Crisis from power station in Leimakhong

Northeast Desk, 12th January: In response to a substantial oil spill originating from the Fuel Power Station at Leimakhong in Manipur, a committee has been established to investigate the environmental crisis.

The incident, causing oil contamination in streams across the Imphal Valley, prompted swift action from the state government.

Manipur’s Governor has ordered the formation of a three-member committee to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the leakage.

Chaired by Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, IPS, ADGP Int Manipur, the committee comprises Dr Shailesh Kumar Chaurasia, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Power), GoM, and M. Pradip Singh, IPS, Additional Secretary (Home), Government of Manipur, as members.

The committee’s mandate encompasses identifying the cause of the oil leak, examining contributing factors, addressing relevant issues during the inquiry, and proposing immediate and long-term safety measures for the power station. They are expected to submit their findings to the government within 15 days of their appointment.

The formation of this committee on January 11, 2024, highlights the government’s urgency in addressing the environmental impact of the oil spill, emphasizing a commitment to swift and comprehensive action.
