Manipur: Committee on Tribal Unity Calls for 12-Hour Shutdown in Kangpokpi District
Imphal: The Committee on Tribal Unity (Sadar Hills), Kangpokpi district, has announced a 12-hour total shutdown in the district on November 30, from 4:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The shutdown is a protest against the “unwarranted road restrictions” imposed by the Army in the vicinity of Leimakhong, following the abduction of an MES employee from the Army cantonment.
The committee strongly condemned the abduction and expressed full support for the ongoing search and rescue efforts. However, it criticized the restrictions imposed on roadways in the aftermath, calling them “regrettable.” The committee highlighted the tense situation in Manipur, where the Kuki-Zo community has been “evicted” from the Imphal valley by the Meitei community since May 3, 2023.
This has led to a complete geographical divide, with the Kuki-Zo inhabiting the hills and the Meitei confined to the valley. Neither group can move freely through the other’s territory. The committee stressed the need for secure and unrestricted road connectivity for hill residents, citing persistent threats from valley-based Meitei militants.
The committee called for immediate action to address the security concerns without imposing unnecessary restrictions. Mass protests will be held simultaneously at strategic locations, including Gamgiphai, Saparmeina, and Keithelmanbi Military Colony. The CoTU has ordered the complete suspension of all travel, fieldwork, business operations, and activities in government and private institutions, demanding absolute participation from the Kuki-Zo community.
