Manipur: Concerns Arise Over Peculiar Substance Spilled in Iril River

Northeast Desk, 7th February: Tension gripped peripheral areas of Imphal East when residents of Litanpokpi Mairelpat near Dolaithabi Dam discovered a peculiar substance spilling into the Iril River on February 7. The substance, described as black, non-greasy, and odourless, sparked panic among residents who rely on the river for domestic use. Authorities from various departments swiftly responded to the incident, with environmental officials collecting samples for laboratory testing to determine the nature of the substance.

Residents expressed shock and concern over the presence of the mysterious substance, highlighting their dependence on the river for various purposes. Urging the government to take swift action, they emphasized the need to identify and address the issue promptly to safeguard public health and the environment.

This incident comes after a previous oil spillage originating from the Leimakhong Power Station on January 10, which led to the release of heavy fuel into nearby streams, raising environmental concerns. Assurances from the Chief Minister regarding prompt measures to control the spill and prevent further contamination have been issued. An expert team, led by Shri Ashutosh Sinha, ADG (Int), Manipur, has been tasked with investigating the incident and assessing the extent of contamination, underscoring the government’s commitment to environmental protection and public safety.
