Manipur Congress Denounces 2025 Waqf Amendment Act, Citing Constitutional Violations
Imphal: The political landscape in Manipur has ignited with fervent opposition as the state’s Congress party has publicly condemned the recently enacted 2025 Waqf Amendment Act, branding it as “unconstitutional.”
The core contention centers around the legislation’s alleged infringement upon fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution, specifically Article 25, which safeguards the Right to Freedom of Religion.
State Congress president Keisham Meghachandra, articulating the party’s stance via a social media platform, X, conveyed a resolute objection to the Act, which recently received presidential assent following its passage through both houses of Parliament. Meghachandra’s statement underscored the party’s belief that the Act represents an “unconstitutional legislation” designed to exert state control over personal laws, a move they perceive as a direct assault on the rights of minority communities.
The Manipur Congress has pledged to stand in solidarity with the nation’s minorities, vowing to oppose what they perceive as a divisive agenda orchestrated by the RSS/BJP. Meghachandra’s declaration emphasized the party’s commitment to challenging the legislation, which they argue threatens to seize properties belonging to minority community members, a move they deem to be against the law of the land.
Conversely, the Act’s proponents highlight its intent to modernize the administration of Waqf properties, aiming to protect heritage sites, bolster social welfare initiatives, and enhance transparency in property management. The legislation also seeks to improve coordination between Waqf boards and local authorities, while safeguarding the rights of stakeholders.
