Manipur Congress Leader Accuses CM of Threatening MLAs Over No-Confidence Motion

Imphal: Manipur Congress Legislature Party leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has alleged that Chief Minister N Biren Singh issued threats to MLAs, warning that any member moving a no-confidence motion against his government would be chased by the public and unable to live in their house.

The Congress leader claimed that the statement, allegedly made during a Samvidhan Gaurav Abhiyan event at the BJP headquarters on January 14, was an attack on democratic principles and the rights of legislators granted by the Constitution.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Ibobi Singh criticized the BJP-led state government for failing to address the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, which has resulted in over 250 deaths since May 2023.

The Congress delegation submitted a memorandum to the governor, urging him to intervene and caution the government.

Ibobi Singh maintained that the opposition would not be intimidated and vowed to continue their duties in the public interest

He did not confirm whether a no-confidence motion would be moved in the upcoming assembly session starting February 10, stating that a decision would be made after discussions within the party.

Senior BJP leaders have yet to respond to the accusations, though they hinted at a possible statement later.
