Manipur Congress Slams Governor’s Move to Cancel Assembly Session, Calls It Unconstitutional

Imphal: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has strongly condemned the Governor’s decision to nullify the summoning of the Assembly session, terming it illegal and unconstitutional. The move has sparked political outrage, with MPCC President Keisham Meghachandra Singh warning of a possible constitutional crisis in the state.

Singh criticized the Governor’s intervention, stating that such powers are not granted under the Indian Constitution. He accused the BJP-led central government of mishandling the situation, calling it an attack on democratic processes.

The controversy erupted after Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla revoked the Assembly session scheduled for February 10, just hours after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. In an official notification, the Governor declared his previous order from January 24 as “null and void,” effectively canceling the session.

The sudden decision has intensified political uncertainty, as the BJP-led government faces mounting pressure over a potential no-confidence motion and a floor test initiated by the Congress-led Opposition. The Congress has accused the BJP of attempting to stall democratic proceedings and called for constitutional safeguards to prevent further disruptions.

With Manipur already grappling with political instability, the latest development has deepened tensions, raising concerns over the state’s governance and democratic integrity. The Opposition is expected to challenge the Governor’s decision, setting the stage for a potential legal and political showdown in the coming days.
