Manipur: CoTU Extends Total Shutdown in Kangpokpi, Demands Withdrawal of CAPF

Imphal: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), based in Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi district, has extended its ongoing total shutdown for another 24 hours, intensifying its protest against the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the Saibol Bungpi region under Lhungtin Sub-Division.

The shutdown, now in its extended phase, will continue from 2 am on January 4, 2025, to 2 am on January 5, 2025.

CoTU has voiced strong opposition to the CAPF deployment, calling it an unjust imposition on the tribal-dominated region. The committee has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the perceived inaction of local authorities, particularly the Superintendent of Police, in addressing the community’s concerns.

CoTU described the continued presence of CAPF in the area as a direct violation of community rights and a catalyst for unrest.

“The Committee on Tribal Unity is deeply perturbed by the Superintendent of Police’s lack of response to the Kangpokpi public’s protests and their demands for the removal of CAPF from the valley-fringe areas in Saibol Bungpi,” CoTU stated. The group highlighted that their grievances have gone unaddressed despite repeated appeals, prompting the community to escalate its agitation.

The situation took a violent turn on the evening of January 3, when clashes between security personnel and protestors resulted in 15 individuals being injured, 11 of whom required advanced medical treatment. CoTU condemned the “brutal assault” on peaceful demonstrators, asserting that the incident had further solidified their resolve to fight for justice.

In its statement, CoTU emphasized the need for immediate action to de-escalate tensions by withdrawing CAPF from the region. The committee warned of intensified protests if their demands are not met and urged civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and the general public to stand in solidarity with the residents of Sadar Hills.

The protest reflects growing frustration within the community, with CoTU asserting that the removal of CAPF is essential to restore trust in the law enforcement system and ensure peace in the region.
