Manipur Crackdown: Eight Insurgents Arrested, Cache of Arms Recovered in Major Security Sweep

Imphal: In a sweeping crackdown across Manipur, security forces launched coordinated operations on May 21 that led to the arrest of eight insurgents affiliated with multiple outlawed groups and the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition.

The high-intensity raids were carried out across four districts and marked a major success in the state’s ongoing efforts to dismantle insurgent networks and neutralise threats to public safety.

The most notable operation took place at Koirengei Bazar under Heingang Police Station, where security personnel apprehended 52-year-old Nongthombam Robindro Singh, an active member of the proscribed outfit PREPAK. A resident of Sekmai Konjeng Leima, Singh was found in possession of a 7.62mm sniper rifle with a magazine, a 9mm pistol, five rounds of ammunition, a four-wheeler vehicle, and communication devices, underscoring the magnitude of the threat he posed.

Further south, two high-profile members of the RPF/PLA — Huyam Chitaranjan Singh (56) and Lairenlakpam Joychandra Meetei (46) — were arrested during an operation at Pal Ahanbi Canchipur, within the jurisdiction of Singjamei Police Station. Accused of being involved in extortion, the duo was found with a 9mm carbine machine gun and a stockpile of ammunition including 24 AK rifle rounds, a light machine gun magazine, seven detonators, and various pistol and rifle rounds. Authorities also recovered five mobile phones, cash, and a four-wheeler vehicle used in their operations.

Another PLA affiliate, Khundrakpam Robasko Singh (22), was arrested from Khangabok Sorok Wangma under Thoubal Police Station. He was caught with a mobile phone and SIM card believed to be used for coordination of militant activities.

In another major interception under Heingang Police Station, security personnel foiled a grenade sale involving two KCP (MFL) operatives. Thangjam Diya Singh (24) and Chingangbam Bidhyananda Singh (26) were apprehended while attempting to sell five hand grenades. Their arrest led to the seizure of two mobile phones and a two-wheeler vehicle, potentially preventing a future attack.

The final operation of the day occurred near the MSPDCL Power Sub-Station at Kakching Tejpur crossing along IVR Road. Two members of KYKL (SOREPA), Khumukcham Amuthoi Meitei (45) and Mayanglambam Premchand Meitei (41), were detained with communication devices in their possession.

All suspects have been transferred to their respective police stations for interrogation and legal proceedings. The operations represent a significant blow to insurgent activities in the region and highlight the ongoing commitment of security agencies to restoring stability and peace in Manipur.
