Manipur: DGP Vows ‘Ruthless’ Action Against Drug Trade, Says No One Spared
IMPHAL – Manipur’s top cop, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, has issued a stern warning, declaring that anyone found involved in drug-related crimes, including members of the police force, will face “ruthless” and strict action. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ motorcycle rally, DGP Singh underscored the gravity of the drug menace, stating it was a battle for the future of the state and the entire Northeast region.
Singh’s forceful comments come amid a fresh crackdown, which saw the suspension of five police personnel, including an inspector. The action against the officers was reportedly linked to a bribery case where they were accused of accepting money to release apprehended drug peddlers. The DGP made it clear that the battle against drugs would continue unabated, with no exceptions for those in uniform. “We are very categorical and clear: strict action will be taken against any person involved in drug trade—be it a policeman or a civilian,” he stated, emphasizing that the future of Manipur’s youth was at stake.
The gravity of the situation was further highlighted by the history of one of the suspended officers, Sub Inspector Debson Singh, who had been arrested in 2013 on charges of transporting narcotics valued at over ₹3 crore. This past record serves as a stark reminder of the deep-seated challenge of tackling corruption within the very institutions tasked with fighting the drug war. DGP Singh reiterated his commitment to this cause, promising an unwavering fight against the drug menace, regardless of who is involved. The state, he said, is resolute in its efforts to curb this growing problem that has plagued the region.
