Manipur: Dr Bimol Akoijam Slams Poor Construction at Moirang School, Demands Probe
Imphal: Lok Sabha MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has strongly criticised the compromised construction quality of a newly built block at Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, calling for urgent accountability and corrective action.
During a campus inspection on July 14, Dr Bimol expressed grave concern over structural defects in the recently upgraded building. Despite the new construction, students and teachers continue to hold classes in 45-year-old classrooms, citing safety concerns. Cracked walls, an unstable first-floor slab, and a leaking reinforced-concrete roof hastily patched with tin sheets raised alarms.
The MP noted that early complaints about the building’s safety had prompted his visit. “What I saw confirmed those fears. This is not just about poor construction—it’s about putting lives at risk,” he stated. Dr Bimol urged the state government to immediately identify those responsible for the project’s execution and quality control failure and ensure urgent repairs to prevent any tragedy.
Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, one of the oldest government schools in Manipur since its establishment in 1948, continues to maintain strong enrolment and board exam performance despite infrastructural challenges. Acknowledging the staff’s commitment, Dr Bimol, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, assured the school of his full support in addressing its issues.
Later in the day, the MP visited the Kwakta Santhong relief camp in Bishnupur to meet internally displaced persons. He listened to their concerns and urged them to remain hopeful amid continuing challenges.
