Manipur: Elite Forces Nab Myanmar-Trained PREPAK ‘Sergeant Major’ in Imphal East
Imphal, Manipur: In a significant breakthrough against insurgency, security forces in Manipur successfully apprehended a self-styled Sergeant Major of the proscribed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) from Imphal East district on Saturday, July 19. The operation underscores the persistent efforts by authorities to dismantle the networks of banned outfits operating in the region.
The arrested individual has been identified as Konjengbam Tomba Singh alias Laingam, aged 38, a resident of Kontha Ahallup Makha Leikai. Official sources confirmed that Singh is a Myanmar-trained cadre, having reportedly undergone basic military training at PREPAK’s camp located in Tanal, Myanmar, before returning to Manipur.
Authorities revealed that Singh had been actively involved in underground operations and played a crucial role in recruitment activities for PREPAK. His continued commitment to the banned group’s expansion was evident in October 2024, when he successfully inducted a new cadre into the outfit, further solidifying his position within the insurgent structure.
The arrest operation was executed at Singh’s residence, following the receipt of specific intelligence inputs regarding his whereabouts and activities. Singh is currently being held in custody, and further investigations are actively underway. Security agencies are working to identify his associates and uncover any broader insurgent plans he may have been privy to, aiming to disrupt the banned outfit’s operations more comprehensively.
