Manipur Extends Mobile Internet Suspension Amid Escalating Violence; Security Reinforcements Deployed
Imphal: The Manipur government on Saturday extended the suspension of mobile internet services in several districts for another two days, citing the need to prevent the spread of provocative content that could escalate tensions.
This decision, detailed in an order by the Home Department, follows a review of the state’s law and order situation.
The suspension, initially imposed on November 16 after violent incidents in the state, has been repeatedly extended. The measure currently affects the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi. Authorities stated the move is essential to maintain public safety and curb the dissemination of inflammatory materials by anti-social elements.
The unrest began following the discovery of the bodies of three women and three children, triggering widespread violence. While broadband services were restored on November 19 to alleviate difficulties faced by residents, including healthcare and educational sectors, mobile internet remains suspended.
In response to the deteriorating situation, Manipur has bolstered its security with the deployment of 90 additional security forces, supplementing the existing 198 companies. Many of these reinforcements have already arrived in Imphal and are being strategically positioned to secure vulnerable areas, safeguard critical infrastructure, and ensure public safety.
The decision to strengthen security measures was taken during a high-level review meeting attended by representatives from the Army, Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, local police, and the state’s Director General of Police. Officials assessed the situation across Imphal and other districts, identifying sensitive zones requiring immediate attention.
With the additional forces, authorities aim to intensify security in high-risk areas, preventing further unrest and fostering stability in the troubled state.
