Manipur: Fishermen Union Condemns Loktak Hydro Project Extension

Northeast Desk, 16th December: The All Lake Areas Fishers Union, Manipur (ALLAFUM), has strongly denounced the proposed extension of the Loktak Hydroelectric Power Project by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC). NHPC is seeking a 25-year extension, and ALLAFUM claims this move lacks consultation with the Manipur Government and the affected fishing and farming families.

ALLAFUM criticizes NHPC for failing to inform key stakeholders, including the Manipur Government and Loktak fishing community, about its extension plans. The fishing community demands transparency, seeking information on rehabilitation, resettlement plans, and measures to restore the lake’s natural state.

The Loktak project has impacted the fishing community, leading to a decline in fish population, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss. ALLAFUM insists that NHPC must address these concerns before any extension is considered. They call on the Manipur Government to address grievances and not permit an extension without proper resolution.
