Manipur: Gauhati HC Judge Appointed to Lead Tribunal for Meitei Extremist Group Ban Extension
Northeast Desk, 29th November: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has established a tribunal, led by Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi from the Gauhati High Court, for the adjudication of the extended ban on Meitei extremist groups. The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal will assess whether there is sufficient cause to declare Meitei Extremist Organizations of Manipur, along with their factions, wings, and front organizations, as “unlawful associations.”
The MHA’s announcement comes almost 15 days after declaring several Meitei extremist organizations as unlawful associations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for a period of five years.
The notification stated, “The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal” is constituted to adjudicate on the declaration of Meitei Extremist Organizations, including the Peoples’ Liberation Army (PLA) and its political wing, the Revolutionary Peoples’ Front (RPF), the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and its armed wing, the Manipur Peoples’ Army (MPA), the Peoples’ Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), the Kanglei Yaol Kanba Lup (KYKL), the Coordination Committee (CorCom), and the Alliance for Socialist Unity Kangleipak (ASUK) as ‘Unlawful Associations.’
This move underscores the government’s commitment to curbing activities of groups deemed threatening to national security, following a thorough legal process.
