Manipur: Gold bars worth Rs 4.5 cr seized, two held in Imphal

Guwahati: The Customs department has seized gold bars worth around Rs 4.5 crores and arrested two people in the connection at the Imphal district of Manipur.

The two accused identified as S Hemchandra from Thoubal district and Charanga Phumtil from Chandel district.

Based on a tip off, the duo was arrested and which was coming towards Imphal with smuggled gold from the border town of Moreh.

Upon receiving the inputs, Customs detectives were dispatched to Thannapokpi in Chandel.

According to reports, the duo was riding a Moped (a compact single-seater vehicle with foot pedals like a bicycle and a small gasoline engine) without legal documents which were apprehended by the squad.

However, the two were brought to Head Office Custom Division Imphal for further investigation and interrogation because to their suspicious behaviour.

On searching the vehicle, 50 gold biscuits weighing 166 gm each, were found concealed in the inner chamber of the Moped.

It may be mentioned that a case has been registered against the smugglers and the duo will be produced in front of the Chief Judicial Magistrate.
