Manipur Government Allocates Rs 10,000 per Family in Flood Relief; Forms Sub-Committee for IDP Rehabilitation
Northeast Desk, 14th June: The Manipur government has announced immediate financial aid of Rs 10,000 per family for those affected by recent floods, following a decision made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The meeting, held on Thursday evening, also addressed broader state issues and resolved to establish a cabinet sub-committee dedicated to the rehabilitation and resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by ethnic violence.
The floods, which ravaged the Imphal Valley in late May due to breached river embankments triggered by Cyclone Remal, have impacted over 1.88 lakh people and led to damage to more than 24,000 houses.
Governor Anusuiya Uikey recently convened with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh at Manipur Bhawan in New Delhi to discuss pressing concerns in Jiribam district and the plight of flood-affected individuals in Imphal. The meeting emphasized the need for proactive measures to tackle challenges in Jiribam, where recent violence prompted authorities to impose Section 144 to restore peace.
Governor Uikey urged Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to deploy all available resources effectively in managing the district’s situation. She also stressed the immediate provision of essential items to flood victims currently sheltered in relief camps in Imphal.
Despite its history of peace, Jiribam has recently faced disturbances, underscoring the urgency for swift government action to maintain order and tranquility in the region.
