Manipur Government Commences Biometric Data Capture Drive for “Illegal” Myanmar Immigrants

Northeast Desk, 30th July: The Manipur Government has resolutely embarked on an ambitious drive to capture biometric data of all “illegal” Myanmar immigrants residing within the State. As per an official release, this campaign is initiated following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, with the goal of completing the process by September 2023.

To bolster this critical endeavor, a team of officials from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has stepped forward to extend their support to the state government. Specifically deputed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, these NCRB officials are providing training and assistance to State Government Officers involved in the biometric data capture process.

The campaign began in the Imphal East District, where officials conducted the biometric data capture at the Foreigners’ Detention Centre, Sajiwa. With the involvement of NCRB officials, the State Government is determined to ensure a smooth and efficient execution of this initiative.

As the campaign progresses, the scope will extend to cover all districts within Manipur, with the ultimate objective of recording the biometric data of every “illegal” Myanmar immigrant. The State Government is committed to adhering to the set timeline and diligently pursuing this goal.

The rigorous initiative addresses concerns related to undocumented immigrants from Myanmar, emphasizing improved security and regulatory measures within the State. Throughout the process, authorities are dedicated to complying with the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs, while upholding human rights and maintaining transparency.

Completing the biometric capture campaign by September is expected to significantly enhance the State’s capacity to manage immigration matters efficiently and strengthen national security efforts.
