Manipur Government Imposes Total Ban on Hunting Amur Falcons in Tamenglong District
Northeast Desk, 18th September: The Manipur government has issued a strict notification, implementing a total ban on the hunting, capturing, killing, and selling of Amur Falcons (locally known as ‘Kahuaipuina’) throughout Tamenglong district and its neighboring areas. This move is aimed at protecting the migratory bird species, which are crucial to the region’s biodiversity.
The order, effective immediately, warns that any violation of this ban is punishable under sections 50 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Amur Falcons, which migrate to Tamenglong and surrounding regions between October and November, are under threat from illegal hunting, leading the government to take swift action.
In a further step to enforce the ban, the District Magistrate of Tamenglong has mandated the deposit of all air guns with village authorities. This is part of a larger strategy to prevent the shooting of Amur Falcons during their stay. The village authorities will hold onto these air guns until the end of November or until the falcons complete their migration. The collected weapons must be reported to the District Magistrate by September 30, 2024.
The ban applies to several villages in Tamenglong, including Chiuluan, Khangchiuluan, Tamenglong town, Bamgaijang, and many others. Additionally, the nearby villages of Renglong, Guangram, and Raengkhung in Noney district are also covered under the directive.
The government has warned that anyone found violating the order will face legal consequences, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding the migratory birds during their vital period in the region.
