Manipur Government Tightens Birth Certificate Issuance and Aadhaar Date of Birth Corrections
Imphal: In a decisive move to curb discrepancies and potential misuse, the Government of Manipur has mandated stricter protocols for the issuance of birth certificates and the correction of dates of birth in Aadhaar enrolments.
A formal directive issued by the Home Department on November 4, 2024, has been communicated to key administrative bodies across the state.
The official communication explicitly instructs the departments of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj (RD&PR), Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD), and Health & Family Welfare to implement stringent guidelines for all birth certificate issuing authorities. The core emphasis of this directive is to prevent the issuance of multiple birth certificates for a single individual.
To ensure this, the government has stipulated that if a new birth certificate is deemed necessary, the previously issued certificate must be officially cancelled, thereby eliminating the possibility of duplication and its subsequent misuse.
Furthermore, the state government has addressed the increasing concern regarding frequent requests for date of birth corrections in Aadhaar records. This surge in correction requests has reportedly created considerable complications within the Aadhaar enrolment process. To tackle this issue, the Governor of Manipur has issued a clear mandate: the date of birth of an individual must undergo thorough verification before it is officially recorded during Aadhaar registration.
Crucially, the new directive explicitly states that no changes to the date of birth will be permitted in the Aadhaar records once it has been initially registered. This measure aims to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the foundational identity document.
