Manipur Government Transfers Churachandpur SP Amid Controversy

Northeast Desk, 16th April: The Manipur government has transferred Superintendent of Police Shivanand Surve from Churachandpur amid ongoing controversy surrounding his tenure.

In an order dated April 15, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms directed Surve’s transfer, appointing him as the senior staff officer to the DGP.

Shaikh Mohd Zaib Zakir, the Additional SP (Law and Order) of Churachandpur district, has been appointed as the new SP of the district, according to the order.

Surve’s suspension of head constable Siamlalpaul in February, allegedly for association with armed miscreants, had sparked mob violence in Churachandpur, resulting in two fatalities from firing by security personnel.

In response to mounting pressure, Surve was also issued a demand by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum to vacate the district within 24 hours.
