Manipur: Government’s Move on Loktak Inland Waterways Project Faces Backlash from Fishing Community
Northeast Desk, 13th January: The All Loktak Lake Areas Fishers Union, Manipur (ALLAFUM), criticized the Government of Manipur for proceeding with the Loktak Inland Waterways Project without consulting the local fishing community. Expressing concern over the potential negative impact on the lake’s ecology and the livelihoods of fisher families, ALLAFUM questioned why the government did not involve fishers as primary stakeholders in the state-level discussions.
Secretary of ALLAFUM, Oinam Rajen, pointed out that the Transport Department organized interaction sessions on the project, deliberately ignoring Loktak fishers while inviting the unrelated All Manipur Entrepreneur Association (AMEA) to the discussions. The fishers’ union strongly opposes the government’s initiative, emphasizing the need for considering the project’s environmental repercussions and involving the community in the decision-making process.
