Manipur Govt to Declare Kuki Militants ‘Unlawful Organization’
Imphal: In a significant move to curb rising violence, the Manipur government has announced its intention to declare the Kuki militants responsible for the recent killings of civilians in Jiribam as an ‘unlawful organization’ within the next seven days. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of ruling MLAs on November 18, 2024.
The legislators strongly condemned the attack, demanding swift justice for the victims. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh assured the assembly that the government would leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to justice.
A key resolution passed during the meeting called for the imposition of legal measures against the militant group, labeling it an “unlawful organization.” This move is expected to pave the way for further actions, including asset freezes and bans on the group’s activities.
The assembly also discussed strengthening counter-insurgency measures and proposed that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) take over the investigation into the Jiribam killings. The Chief Minister expressed confidence in the NIA’s ability to conduct an impartial inquiry.
The meeting underscored the need to intensify security operations against militant groups, particularly those targeting civilians and public officials. The legislators expressed deep concern over the rise in violence and urged the government to take swift action to curb these incidents.
The resolution also emphasized the importance of community-led peace initiatives to address the root causes of the conflict and prevent further bloodshed. While the declaration of the militant group as an “unlawful organization” is a significant step, the government also recognizes the need for long-term solutions to restore peace and stability in the region.
