Manipur Gripped by Unrest: Arambai Tenggol Calls 10-Day Strike

Imphal: Tensions have flared in Manipur as the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol announced a 10-day bandh, or general strike, starting June 8. This decision follows violent protests that erupted on June 7 after the arrest of one of its leaders, sparking widespread demonstrations across Imphal city.

Late on Saturday night, protesters in Imphal West, particularly in Kwakeithel and Uripok, took to the streets, blocking major roads with burning tyres and unused furniture. Arambai Tenggol members demanded the immediate release of their detained leader, chanting slogans like “We are civilians, not terrorists” and “Release our leader or arrest us all”. The situation turned volatile when some protesters attempted self-immolation, prompting security forces to deploy tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

In response to the escalating situation, authorities have suspended internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN connections, across five valley districts: Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in these districts, with a complete curfew enforced in Bishnupur district, aiming to prevent the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content on social media.

The protests have brought parts of the city to a standstill, causing severe traffic disruptions and sparking panic among residents. Several demonstrators sustained injuries during the clashes, and normal life in the capital city has been severely affected.

The Arambai Tenggol group has been involved in past conflicts, and its actions have been framed by some as a legitimate defence of their community. However, the group’s activities have also been scrutinised, with some viewing them as radical. The current unrest adds to the year-long crisis in Manipur, which began with ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
