Manipur: IDPs in Kangpokpi Gain New Hope with Skill Development Programme
A transformative ten-day vocational training programme commenced on Wednesday at Kanggui Christian College in Kangpokpi district, offering a lifeline to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) seeking to rebuild their lives. This collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Kangpokpi District Administration and the Mustard Seed Foundation (MSF), aims to equip 80 registered IDPs with crucial skills for sustainable livelihoods.
The programme, designed to foster economic independence, offers practical training in high-demand areas such as electrical installation, baking, food processing, and mushroom cultivation. To ensure wider reach and accessibility for displaced residents, the initiative will be rolled out in three phases across Kangpokpi, Saikul, and Saitu.
Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari, IAS, officially launched the programme, underscoring its pivotal role in translating learned skills into tangible economic stability. He highlighted that the initiative goes beyond mere training, actively creating avenues for employment, self-employment, and entrepreneurship. Chaudhari stressed that the core objective is empowerment, not just instruction. He further added that exceptional participants could even avail support through central schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) and the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), offering a significant boost to their entrepreneurial aspirations.
Chaudhari urged the trainees to approach the sessions with dedication, emphasising that successful completion could unlock opportunities for bank loans, job placements, and inclusion in future government initiatives. The launch event saw the presence of various district officials and MSF representatives, highlighting the strong partnership driving this crucial project. Training sessions are being conducted flexibly, with both morning and evening slots available to accommodate the diverse schedules of participants. This initiative represents a significant step in the ongoing efforts to restore stability and foster self-reliance among those impacted by recent unrest in the region.
