Imphal: Thousands of students across Imphal East and Imphal West are set to return to classrooms on Thursday, June 12, as educational institutions in both districts prepare to resume operations. The decision follows an extended shutdown caused by recent flooding and severe weather that had brought academic activities to a halt in Manipur’s capital region.
District authorities confirmed the reopening after extensive field assessments ensured the safety of educational facilities. Dr. Nivedita Lairenlakpam, Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East, issued the official order, citing a comprehensive field inquiry report provided by the Zonal Education Officer of Zone-II, Porompat.
The directive encompasses all types of educational institutions, including government schools, government-aided institutions, and private schools within the twin districts. School administrators have been directed to implement all necessary safety protocols to ensure a seamless and incident-free resumption of classes.
Specific guidelines have been laid out for the reopening. School heads are mandated to meticulously verify the safety and cleanliness of their premises, with particular attention to areas impacted by floodwaters. The precautionary suspension of classes was deemed necessary to safeguard both students and staff during the inclement weather.
Zonal Education Officers have been tasked with continuous oversight of the reopening process, including submitting daily operational reports to district offices and the state’s Directorate of Education. These reports will document school functionality and highlight any emerging challenges requiring immediate intervention.
Local authorities remain vigilant against potential weather-related disruptions. Mayanglambam Rajkumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West, underscored that the decision to reopen was predicated on improved weather conditions and thorough post-flood assessments conducted across his district.
The education department has cautioned that any deterioration in weather or fresh flooding could lead to further directives aimed at ensuring student welfare. Officials emphasised that monitoring systems are fully active to enable swift responses to any situation that could compromise school safety.
The prolonged closure had impacted a significant number of students in the twin districts, which are central to Manipur’s educational landscape.
