Manipur: Imphal turns fortress ahead of Independence Day amid strike call

IMPHAL – Security has been significantly ramped up across Manipur, with the state capital Imphal resembling a fortress as officials prepare for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. The heightened security measures come in the backdrop of a general strike called by several outlawed outfits for Friday, August 15.

Officials on Thursday confirmed the intensified deployment of state forces, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) units, the Army and Assam Rifles. Key thoroughfares and junctions, including Keisampat and Moirangkhom, are seeing increased presence of security personnel. The forces are taking no chances, with rehearsals for the August 15 parade in full swing at the 1st Manipur Rifles ground and various district headquarters. Contingents from the CRPF, police, Assam Rifles, and even students, are being put through their paces in march-past drills.

The proactive stance is also evident in the field. The CRPF reported that on Wednesday alone, they had set up mobile check posts at strategic locations, where they inspected 443 vehicles and frisked 722 individuals. The extensive security cordon is a clear signal from the authorities to ensure a peaceful and secure celebration of the nation’s 79th Independence Day.
