Manipur: Imphal Valley Breathes Easier as Curfew Relaxes

Imphal: In a significant move towards normalcy, the Manipur government has announced a substantial relaxation of curfew measures across the Imphal valley. Officials confirmed today that prohibitory orders have been lifted in three districts, allowing residents to step out from 5 AM to 5 PM, a decision stemming from a careful review of the prevailing law and order situation.

Under the updated directives, citizens are now permitted daytime movement, provided their activities do not disrupt public peace. However, the period from 5 PM to 5 AM will continue to see restricted movement, a measure deemed crucial by the District Magistrate of Imphal West to prevent any potential disturbances and ensure nighttime tranquillity.

The initial prohibitory order, enacted on June 7, 2025, under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, was necessitated by violent protests that erupted following the arrest of a leader from Arambai Tenggol by the CBI. The government had then enforced stringent measures to maintain public order in the affected districts. This latest decision to ease the curfew reflects a considered effort to balance public safety with the community’s yearning for normalcy.

Separate orders from the district magistrates of Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, and Bishnupur uniformly stated that “movement of persons outside their homes is permitted from 5am to 5pm, as long as no activities are carried out that could disrupt law and order in the area.” These widespread restrictions were initially imposed across five districts of the Imphal valley on the night of June 7, triggered by the intense protests surrounding the Arambai Tenggol leader’s arrest.

It is important to note that this relaxation does not extend to gatherings. Assemblies of five or more individuals, along with the carrying of any weapons or materials that could incite violence, remain strictly prohibited. This continued vigilance aims to ensure that public safety and the rule of law are not compromised even amidst this partial easing of restrictions.

Crucially, certain essential services continue to operate without hindrance. Government agencies involved in law enforcement, emergency services, and vital banking and financial institutions are exempt from these restrictions. Authorities underscore the paramount importance of these services, particularly during periods of restricted movement, to maintain essential operations for the public’s well-being.

The revised order is set to remain effective until further notice, with all other conditions from the earlier June 7 order remaining unchanged unless explicitly modified. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation, ready to make further adjustments as necessary to guarantee the safety and security of Imphal valley residents. The community is earnestly urged to extend their full cooperation to the authorities, playing their part in maintaining peace and order in the region.
