Manipur: Kangpokpi Launches Plastic Bottle Bank to Combat Plastic Pollution

Northeast Desk, August 14 — In a significant move towards addressing plastic pollution, Assam’s Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with the District Administration Kangpokpi and the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council Kangpokpi, inaugurated a Plastic Bottle Bank in Kangpokpi today.

The initiative, launched by ADC/ADM Kangpokpi Shokhongam Baite, aims to promote responsible disposal and recycling of plastic bottles in the region. Baite expressed gratitude to the Directorate for providing ten bottle banks, describing the project as a major step in waste management and recycling.

“The introduction of the Plastic Bottle Bank is a pivotal move in our waste management strategy. It marks a significant advance in recycling efforts,” said Baite, urging local residents to support and participate in the initiative. He also emphasized that this project will be extended to other towns and villages in the future.

SK Gainamei, Programme Officer with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, highlighted that the Plastic Bottle Bank is designed to encourage the community to deposit used plastic bottles. These bottles will then be collected for recycling or repurposing, as part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce plastic waste and mitigate its environmental impact.

Gainamei underscored the importance of community involvement in the initiative, aiming to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and the critical role of recycling. “By engaging residents in proper disposal practices, we hope to enhance awareness about the benefits of recycling and contribute to a cleaner environment,” he said.

The launch event was attended by James Doujapao Haokip, Chief Executive Officer of the Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council Kangpokpi, Angam Leivon, Chairman of the Kangpokpi Town Committee, and other local officials.

This initiative is part of the Directorate’s ongoing efforts to tackle climate change and environmental degradation in Manipur, reflecting the government’s commitment to eco-friendly solutions and fostering a sustainable future for the state.
