Manipur: Kangpokpi Mourns as Convoy Departs to Receive Air India Crash Victim’s Mortal Remains
Kangpokpi: A deep pall of grief hung over Kangpokpi district as family members and community representatives embarked early Thursday morning to receive the mortal remains of Lamnunthem Singson, one of the two Manipuri cabin crew members who perished in the tragic Air India crash near Ahmedabad on June 12.
The first convoy, comprising five vehicles, departed Kangpokpi around 5:00 a.m., carrying Singson’s immediate family, close relatives, and local civil society leaders. A second, larger convoy of around ten vehicles, led by the Kuki Students’ Organisation Sadar Hills (KSO-SH) and the Sadar Hills Private Schools’ Association (SHIPS), followed at 7:30 a.m.
The mortal remains, escorted by two elder brothers and a cousin, were flown from Ahmedabad at around 8:00 a.m. and are expected to arrive at Dimapur Airport by 1:45 p.m.
A condolence service is being arranged at the airport under the aegis of the Kuki Union Dimapur, with participation from the Naga Council Dimapur and the Director of the Airport Authority of India, Dimapur. The ceremony is expected to be a solemn and emotional tribute to the young victim.
Following the service, the convoy will commence its return journey to Kangpokpi, where the final leg is expected to take time due to poor road conditions and planned condolence stops from well-wishers and community members along the route. The entourage is expected to reach by 9:00 or 10:00 p.m.
The tragic loss of Lamnunthem Singson has united communities in grief across Manipur, with heartfelt tributes pouring in from civil society and students’ organisations as the state continues to mourn its loss from the devastating aviation disaster.
