Manipur: KSO Delhi NCR President Clarifies Shirui Lily Festival Remarks, Cites Security Concerns

Imphal: Paojakhup Guite, President of the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) in Delhi & NCR, has stepped forward to set the record straight regarding his recent comments on the Shirui Lily Festival. His remarks, which circulated widely, were apparently taken out of context, leading to a significant misinterpretation of his true intentions.

Guite emphatically stated that his words were never meant to be an attack on the cultural event itself. Instead, his core message was to highlight crucial security issues and advocate for the urgent promotion of peace within the region. He maintained that his primary concern was the well-being of the public amidst prevailing tensions.

“My statement was a cautious warning intended to prevent escalation and save lives,” Guite clarified. “It was misinterpreted as inflammatory, whereas it was truly driven by a deep concern for public safety.” He stressed that his aim was to correct the misperception that his comments were antagonistic towards the festival, reiterating that ensuring safety amid ongoing tensions in Manipur was his priority.

A significant point of concern for Guite was the potential for the festival to be misused, leading to a breach of designated buffer zones. These zones, he explained, are vital barriers that separate conflicting regions and are essential for maintaining order and preventing disputes. He urged both authorities and the public to remain vigilant about their importance in safeguarding communities.

Guite issued a strong caution: “The unchecked movement of these armed factions in vulnerable areas is a serious risk to all communities, especially to women and children. Overlooking these threats could jeopardise efforts to restore stability.” His statement underscores the immediate need for attention to the security dangers posed by these armed groups.

He assured that there is no organised opposition from Kuki civil society organisations against the Shirui Lily Festival. However, he insisted that public gatherings should be managed with care to avoid heightening tensions. Referencing observations by the Supreme Court of India, he highlighted the breakdown of law and order in Manipur and the ensuing erosion of public trust in state institutions.

Clarifying his personal involvement, Guite firmly denied any connections with village volunteer groups or militias. He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to peaceful and democratic methods of protest, stating, “I have always advocated for peaceful protest and dialogue. My comments were not a call to arms, but a reminder of the delicate balance needed to prevent further violence.”

Guite concluded by reaffirming his respect for India’s democratic principles. He articulated his belief that buffer zones should not be perceived as divisive but as essential tools for reducing tension and safeguarding communities. His dedication to unity and the protection of lives was evident as he declared, “As a peace-loving citizen of this great nation, I stand for unity and the protection of all lives. Buffer zones are not symbols of division but mechanisms to reduce tension and protect all communities.”
